“As I Have Loved You”

There is no picture for today’s blog because I wasn’t able to get it to upload properly.

The title comes from John 13:34-35 in the New International Version (NIV) of the Bible. Jesus is speaking. “A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have love you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Notice he says that this is a commandment. In Matthew 22:36-40 (also NIV) we find these words: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment of the Law?” Jesus replied, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

We Christians claim to believe Jesus. We claim to serve Him. Yet, we allow our personal opinions to not only get in the way of these commandments, but also totally ignore them.

Two major Protestant denominations have, in my lifetime, both failed to uphold these commandments. I know this because I grew up in one, and joined the other as an adult. Both were fractured as churches split and/or left the denomination.

Why is that? How can good, Godly people allow this to happen? And, yes, I have many good, Godly friends in both of these denominations, and yet the facts are the facts.

We are all human, trying the best we know how. None of us are perfect, and that includes me. All of us will make mistakes and we will do things that are  displeasing to God.

So what can we do moving forward to prevent future fractues within the Church. We must remember these truths: We ARE the Church; we ARE the body of Christ; we ARE His hands and feet on this earth; His truths matter more than our opinions.

God is Love. Love is the key. Regardless of our personal opinions, our love of God should always guide our choices and decisions. Love Him and love others – two commandments given us by Jesus.

1 Corinthians 13:8 (NIV) reads: Love never fails.

If we believe that verse, and if we take to heart the words of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, then we MUST live our lives governed by love.

Our opinions can be shared and discussed always in love. A lost world is watching us. What story are our actions telling them? It should always be God’s story, and His story is LOVE.

“For God so loved the world…”

Yes He did, and yes He does.

See you next time,
